Iodine deficiency is one of the four major deficiencies in the world and approximately 20% of our population is iodine deficient according to the Centers of Disease Control.
Depending where you live in the United States it’s possible that the chances of you being iodine deficient are higher.
Iodine is vital for thyroid function and according to the Journal of cancer, iodine deficiency may actually contribute to breast cancer formation and the progression of breast cancer itself. In a study published in the Journal of cancer it was indicated that iodine treatment resulted in reduce tumor size and a reduction in a marker used to detect growing cancer.
Iodine is is the mineral that your thyroid uses to make thyroid hormone. The thyroid gland uses iodine and tyrosine to make T4. T4 travels to the liver. The liver converts 80% of T4 to T3 which is the active form of thyroid.
If you have an iodine deficiency you may experience the following symptoms:
- Fatigue
- Weight Gain
- Hair loss
- Dry skin
- Depression
- Brain Fog
- Carbohydrate Cravings
Some people will have these symptoms due to thyroid problems or iodine deficiency and other people will have these symptoms do to adrenal fatigue, a congested liver or lymphatic system .

- Seaweed
- Fish, shellfish
- Yogurt
- Eggs
- Beef liver
- Chicken
However, there’s a group of people that definitely should not take iodine. If you have Hashimoto’s thyroiditis do not use iodine. Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune disease were the immune system is attacking the thyroid gland. If a Hashimoto’s case adds iodine it will worsen the condition.
