Insomnia has many underlying causes from hormonal imbalances, adrenal fatigue, intestinal problems, food sensitivities and neurotransmitter deficiencies to name just a few. Neurotransmitters are chemicals in the brain that help the brain cells communication with each other. There are certain neurotransmitters that stimulate the brain helping you stay very alert and energetic. There are other neurotransmitters that help you stay calm and help you get into deep sleep. It is key to have the proper balance between these stimulating neurotransmitters and relaxing sleep promoting neurotransmitters.
If there are too many stimulating neurotransmitters floating around, insomnia can occur and you will have a very difficult time falling asleep or you’ll wake up in the middle of the night (around 2am to 3am) and will have trouble falling back to sleep. If you don’t have enough of the relaxing neurotransmitters you can feel, “tired and wired.” You will feel like you are sooooooo tired and are just dying to sleep but can’t. You might fall asleep but you’ll be awake after only 1.5 to 3 hours of sleep. You’ll probably end up being in and out of sleep all night long.
Now there are many things that can cause or contribute to an imbalance or a deficiency in your neurotransmitters that would produce insomnia. And when I say many, I mean at least 20 different things that can go wrong in the body that can produce neurotransmitter inducing insomnia. Below is an example of a problem that can arise with protein that can produce insomnia.
Neurotransmitters are substances that are usually made from protein. Eggs, for example, are protein.
Protein is broken down in our digestive tract into tiny pieces called amino acids. These amino acids are then modified by your body and changed into neurotransmitters. For example, the neurotransmiter serotonin is made from the amino acid L-Tryptophan. L-Tryptophan comes from the protein in eggs and turkey and is one of the reasons why people can get so tired after a big turkey dinner at Thanksgiving.
